In a concert conducted by Sergey Smbatyan, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra gives an exciting insight into the diversity and vitality of Maltese music. Charles Camilleri's Malta Suite is one of his best-known compositions. Camilleri, who died in 2009, was an extremely prolific composer and wrote the suite at the age of only 15, strongly influenced by the music and folk tradition of his native country. Joseph Vella (1942–2018) composed his symphonic poem Rebbieħa (Victorious), inspired by the history of his small nation that was often the scene of devastating conflicts. Vella referred to his music as “pan-European”. According to these words, it makes sense to confront his piece with the lyricism of William Walton's Viola Concerto, played by Lawrence Power, and Henryk Wieniawski's highly romantic Violin Concerto No. 2, interpreted by Carmine Lauri.
