Alexey Shor's monumental Images from the Great Siege was premiered at the Malta International Music Festival, in 2018, under the baton of Sergey Smbatyan. With his music, the contemporary composer paints a fascinating series of historical tableaux that are larger-than-life and tell a fascinating story about incredible courage and determination. A connoisseur of Shor's oeuvre, Armenian conductor Smbatyan is also a renowned expert in the works of Mozart and Beethoven. As such, he opens the programme with the overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni as well as Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 which shows the composer in romantic exhilaration.
